At about 5:40am last Sunday morning a Guatemalan immigrant named Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax came to the assist of a woman who was being attacked by a knife-wielding assailant.
For his trouble Tale-Yax was stabbed several times in the chest.
By the time firemen showed up 聽- an hour and a half later 鈥?it was like well late. Mr. Tale-Yax had died.
This story would be just another sad story of violence and the cost one pays for doing the right thing if it were not for the fact that we now understand that as Tale-Yax laid dying on the street dozens of people simply passed him by 鈥?one even stopping to receive a photo of the man with the camera in his cellular phone. While that individual had time to snap a shot with his phone it apparently never occurred to him to use that same phone to call 911.
I guess some people might have thought that Mr. Tale-Yax had a little too much to drink on a Saturday night and passed out on the sidewalk. Yet one 聽man who passed by actually lifted Tale-Yax鈥檚 head and body revealing that the man was lying in a pool of blood while exposing the knife wounds.
And then he simply walked off.
How do we know all this?
It turns out that the crime took place in view of a security surveillance camera.
According to the New York Times
The police confirmed the authenticity of surveillance video on The New York Post鈥檚 Web site that shows dozens of people walking by Mr. Tale-Yax who was homeless lying on the sidewalk at 144th Street and 88th Road in Jamaica.
Via New York Times
Obviously the fact that dozens of people could pass this man by as a curiosity 鈥?behind the crime had already been committed placing those observing in no personal danger- reveals something about people that is truly too appalling to contemplate. Would it have killed any of these people to pull out their ubiquitous cellular phones and put in a call for help? 聽If they didn鈥檛 want to get involved they could have simply made the call and then left.
But just as distressing is the New York Post report indicating that the police received four 911 calls reporting a screaming woman 鈥?the lady who was initially under offensive 鈥?at the location where this all happened. The police assert they found nothing at the scene.
How can that be? If a man is lying on the ground at the scene how could the cops miss him if they actually showed up?
The inhumanity of the many people who passed by as Tale-Yax lay dying is evident disturbing and disgusting. Less obvious is why the NYPD seemed to have no idea that the man was there when they had received four 911 calls at the time of the crime.
While the following video may spoil your Sunday morning 鈥?I know it did mine 鈥?you may want to see this with your own eyes.
